It is human to long for conditions that bring well-being. Our dreams and fantasies are composed of these longings – for safety, loving relationship, a sense of adventure woven into life. But allowing for the possibility of what we long for usually requires some willingness to open the mind to what we have already lived through.⁣

If our history includes painful disappointments – in oneself or others – it can be difficult to look back. It stirs feelings of fear, anger, and the edgy concern that more disappointments will come. ⁣

But if we can withstand the impact of touching those feelings without getting lost in them, a new trust in our own mind can emerge. A sense that the psyche pushes for fullness of living. It doesn’t like to have missing parts, missing moments. Whole chapters of life pushed into the shadows.⁣

It wants an openness to the fuller truth of who we are and the world we have navigated. When we risk looking back – with the help of those who can accompany us with an open mind and heart – life can begin anew.⁣
